I go through phases of places in the world or the country that I have a real fascination with/desire to be in/live in/experience/be part of and it's all based on songs, whether the band originates from there or just sings about it. I've been really into Cuba because of Buena Vista Social Club and also the idea of Joe Strummer wanting to be drunk in Havana as he states in "Tennessee Rain". Also anything and anywhere Latin is so different from what I know and my own life and my life is kind of lacking that influence. It's pretty possible that my desire to learn Spanish has to do with that, along with the fact that I do feel it's so practical and almost think it's ignorant not to know any Spanish at all and live in this country.. and I love Atlanta because of the Black Lips and I loved Ireland when I first loved the Pogues, and I'm always thinking of England. For example. Now I love Dallas because of the silver jews song; Kaitlin says it sucks but I don't care. Haha. When I was driving to school on my last day of school I was listening to Tennessee Rain which became something of an anthem for me this year, a beautiful way to long for an escape without feeling trapped, it's just hopeful wistful and wonderful... I looked up when I was at a toll and the car in front of me had a Tennessee license plate. I thought that was awesome.
I always liked this quote from High Fidelity... it's ironic but so true (geography relates to what I'm saying, but all of it, really.... sums up what's so true for me, that music has always been the portal through which i've viewed things, wondered about things, learned about things. everything i'm curious about, passionate about, the way i like school now, the way i lust for life)
"Is it so wrong, wanting to be home with your record collection? It's not collecting records is like collecting stamps, or beermats, or antique thimbles. There's a whole world in here, a nicer, dirtier, more violent, more peaceful, more colorful, sleazier, more dangerous, more loving world than the world I live in; there is history, and geography, and poetry, and countless other things I should have studied at school, including music."

Now There's A Lot Of Things That I'm Gonna Miss
Like thunder down country and the way water drips when you're running for the door in the rain
all is pretty surreally calm and joyful now that it's suddenly summer.
When the rain hits you it hits you slow. Stitch after stitch
And every little pain or pleasure hits me slow and strong the way david berman delivers his words, and the way the rain falls stitch after stitch. No I don't really want to die, I only want to die in your eyes
